Sustainability overview
- An overview of the key policies and legislation driving the change towards sustainable buildings and renewable energy
- Understanding current national policy and likely future policy direction
Energy efficiency
- The importance of energy efficiency including air-tightness, u-values, and heat loss through the building fabric
- Passive solar design and reducing the energy demand of the dwelling and how these measures affect the performance of the building
Renewable energy
- Introduction to renewable energy technologies, covering solar thermal, photovoltaic’s, wind turbines, ground and air source heat pumps, biomass and combined heat and power
- Each technology will be discussed in terms of how they work, how they work together, and the benefits and barriers to each
Energy strategies
- Understanding and interpreting energy strategies
- How to assess the validity of the energy report and identify missing information

Sustainable features for new buildings
- Water conservation through rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling; how these systems work and suitable applications for this technology
- Different types of green and brown roofs, how they work and the practicalities of integrating this feature in new buildings
- Common forms and applications of Sustainable Urban Drainage and discussion of where and when they are suitable
- Opportunities for low-cost solutions resulting in positive ecological enhancement
- Factors to consider in sustainable materials selection
Trainer
Miranda Pennington is a Sustainability Consultant with Metropolis Green. She works within the property and development sector providing advice on sustainable buildings and schemes. Miranda also gives advice on renewable technologies and achieving carbon reduction targets on a site specific basis. She is an accredited Code for Sustainable Homes Assessor so is qualified to provide advice and guidance to clients on achieving Code levels, and can carry out full Code assessments.
